Lena learned the dressmaking trade as an apprentice to a seamstress in Fredericton. At the time, most women, unable to procure ready made garments, hired a seamstress to come to their home to make clothes for the family. Lena, my mother, worked as a seamstress. Lena went to Boston and procured work in a factory making shirts--her stay in Boston was of short duration and she returned to NB. (Evelyn (Gordon) Grant The Wind at My Back: Memoirs, 1998.
