Research Notes

On my mother's side, I have an extensive family genealogy to work from, compiled by my grandmother. I am sure that she consulted many sources for William Wesley Gordon and Margaret Barker and Descendants; however, she did not provide them in the compilation. She appears to have accessed censuses and other typical public records used by genealogists, in addition to personal knowledge, as passed down through the family.

I am in the process of creating, or adding to existing, wikitree profiles for the people who appear in this genealogy.

This document (47 pages long) is in the collections of PANB (Provincial Archives of New Brunswick), Ref # MC1145, but is not available in digital format on their website. I am happy to send images of pages that include persons you are interested in. About 400 persons are included in the tree.

  • William Wesley Gordon and Margaret Barker and Descendants, compiled by Anonymous (Gordon) Grant. 1987. Currently in possession of K Longinetti. Descendants of Wm Gordon (b. 1771) and Margaret Barker (b. 1770) through 1987. A mostly unsourced family tree. Includes approx. 400 names, over 47 pages. Images of relevant pages upon request. Also a holding of Provincial Archives of New Brunswick, Ref. # MC1145.

You are free to use any photos that I have uploaded and indicated as coming from my personal family collection. (I may be able to rescan and send to you better quality images of particular photos that interest you, if you email me your request.)

Resources for New Brunswick genealogy

There are a handful of websites that can provide a wealth of vital information, for those ancestors from the NB area.

New Brunswick seems to have a keen interest in its heritage. Many volunteers have contributed to the transcription of original written documents, and many others have indexed them and created online tools, such that we now have easy online access to them.

Library and Archives Canada

Census records for New Brunswick, from 1851 through 1921, are searchable by any number of fields. Actual census pages are then viewable and downloadable. (Just know that if the original enumerator [census taker] misspelled a person's or family's name, it will also be indexed the same misspelled way in the search tool. As well, volunteers who transcribed the census records sometimes made incorrect guesses at the sometimes poor handwriting of the original enumerators.)

Provincial Archives of New Brunswick

Their Federated Database Search feature allows you to search their entire collection at once. which includes marriage, birth, death, cemetery, newspapers, land records and more.

The County Genealogical Guides, at PANB, are helpful to learn the nuances of the geography of the county you are interested in—the many parishes that comprise it, and how they may have changed boundaries and names, through the years. http://archives.gnb.ca/ResearchTools/CountyGuides.aspx?culture=en-CA

New Brunswick Genealogical Society

http://nbgs.ca/

Though some of the resources here are available only via paid membership, there is still a lot of helpful and unique info, in their Genealogical Resources section.

Particularly useful at the NBGS site have been the marriage records of several counties:
