Egbert’s parents,Meta and John Rechner, had eight sons and three daughters. He was one of only four sons to survive beyond infancy.
Egbert was only six years old when his mother died, so he and his six siblings were cared for by their Lamcken grandparents in their home in North Adelaide.
Family recollections indicate that Egbert enlisted in the Australian Army in the First World War, and this has been verified by official records.
However, after his discharge, he changed his name and had no further contact with his family.
