Biography

John Rebman has German Roots.

John, son of Jacob Rebman and his second wife Susan Klatfelder,[1][2] was born 18 December 1882 in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[3][4][1] After the death of his mother in 1895[5] and his father in 1898,[6] John (age 19, apprentice machinist) lived with his older half-sister Emma J. Rebman (age 41) in York, York County, next to other siblings.[7] Also residing with her were two more of his siblings: Sallie S. (25) and Paul (13).[7]

On 29 January 1913 in Richmond, Virginia, he married Mary Chesterman Murray,[8] daughter of Cleveland Eugene Murray and Florence Gertrude Chesterman.[8][9]

When he registered for the draft in 1918, he was a machinist for an iron works in Richmond.[3] At that time he was described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.[3] In 1942 that description was refined to 5'9", 168 lbs., bald with a sallow complexion.[4] They were still living in Richmond.[4]

Before John's death at age 66 from a myocardial infarction and cirrhosis of the liver, he was a machinist for the state highway department. He died 20 April 1949 at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond[1] and was buried there at Forest Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum.[10]

Research Notes

  • Birth Date: His registration for World War I shows the same day as on other records,[1][4][10] but the year given is 1880.[3] The 1900 census uses December 1881.[7]
  • Census Records: Only the 1900 census record has been located under the names John and/or Ervin/Irvin. He may have used another name socially.
