Biography

Peter Rebman has German Roots.

Peter Franklin, son of Jacob Rebman and his second wife Susan Klatfelder, was born 26 September 1866 in West Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania..[1] His parents had him baptized 3 August 1867 at Christ Lutheran Church in York, York County.[1][2] He grew up in West Manchester Township, where his father cultivated rented land.[3] The household in 1870 included his parents Jacob (age 45, tenant farmer) and Susan Rebman (25), Peter (3), his siblings Amanda Elizabeth (5) and Edward Eugene (1), and his half-siblings (and first cousins once removed) Clara Ann (19), George (17, school teacher), Jacob (16), Charles (15) and Emma (13).[3]

The family remained in West Manchester in 1880, where the household was composed of Jacob (age 56, farmer) and Susan Rebman (36), Peter Franklin (13, farmhand), Amanda Elizabeth (15), Edward Eugene (10, farmhand), Albert (9), Katie May (7), Sallie S. (5), Ella Nora "Ellie" (1), and his half-sister Emma Rebman (22).[4]

On 22 April 1897 in Hopewell Township, York County, he married Mary Alzetta Thompson,[5] daughter of Alexander Duncan Thompson and Annie E. Trout. They had one daughter:

  • Esther M. Rebman (b. 3 August 1901;[6] m. Edwin C. Resser;[7][8] d. 17 May 1967).[6] One daughter.

The couple settled in York, York County, where, in 1900, Peter F. (age 34, butcher) and Mary A. Rebman (33) lived with Mary's sister Emma A. Thompson (29, public school teacher), widowed mother Annie E. Thompson (55) and brother Earl A. Thompson (14).[9] In 1910 Mary's mother (age 64) continued to live with Peter F. (age 42, cattle dealer), Mary A. (42) and their daughter Esther Rebman (8).[10] The household in 1920 in York encompassed Peter T. (age 52, cattle dealer) and Mary A. Rebman (52), their daughter Esther M. Rebman (18, saleslady in a shoe store), their nephew Earl A Thompson (4) and Mary's mother Annie E Thompson (74).[11]

Mary's mother Annie E. Thompson died in 1926 after having resided with the Rebman's for more than a quarter century.[12] There was no diminution in the household size because Esther M. (age 28) had married bringing her husband Edwin C. Resser (29, broker in a bond office) and newborn daughter to live with her parents Peter F. (62) and Mary A. Rebman (62).[7] The family remained stable in 1940 when it consisted of Peter (age 72) and Mary Rebman (72), and Edwin (39, brokerage house office manager) and Esther Resser (38) and their ten-year-old daughter.[8]

Mary died in 1945.[13] Peter Franklin Rebman died 15 January 1954 and was buried at Greenmount Cemetery in York.[14]

Research Notes

  • Birth Year: Although his headstone gives his birth year as 1867,[14] the baptismal record shows it is in 1866 with baptism about 11 months later in 1867.[1]
  • Middle Name: The middle name on Find-a-Grave is that given in Prowell,[2] rather than his birth record.
  • Wife's Maiden Name: Although the marriage record shows her name as "Thomas," census records and her headstone show her name as "Thompson." Additionally, the 1900 census indicates they had been married three years, so this should be the correct record.
