Biography

William was born in Tullygarley Townland of Craigs Parish on 23 July 1826.[1]

William was a 19 year-old linen weaver living with his family in Craigs, Antrim at the time of the 1851 census.[2]

He was about 23 when he married Mary Barns at the Registrar's Office in Ballymena in 1853.[3]

Their children were born in Craigs, but the whole family later relocated to the United States. William and Mary lived in Potter, South Dakota. Reports of William's birth date began to vary at this point, placing it closer to 1822-1825.[4][5] He petitioned for naturalization in 1907, giving his place of birth as Craigs, Ireland, and a list of his children.[6][7]

William died on 7 May 1907 in Potter, South Dakota.[8] He was buried at Springs Cemetery in Fairview, Potter, South Dakota. His gravestone gives his birth date as 1822.[9]
