John was a linen weaver and farmer who lived in Craigs, Antrim, Ireland.[1]
He died of heart disease (10 years) and cardiac dropsy in 1879.[2] Note that his death record gives his age as 80, which differs from the report of his age at the time of the 1851 census.
The Will of John Raphael late of Craigs County Antrim Farmer deceased who died 8 January 1879 at same place was proved at Belfast by the oath of William Raphael of Craigs Weaver the sole Executor.[3]
Regarding the ages of John, Elizabeth and their children, the primary source is the 1851 census, giving their year of marriage as 1830 and listing the ages of all family members. However, it is worth noting that almost all other reports of the ages of these individuals place their birth dates a few years earlier than was reported in 1851, particularly for John himself, who was said to be 10 years older than his age reported in 1851 would suggest when he died in 1879. Considering that the 1851 census reports a possibly unrealistic number of children (7) between the ages of 14 and 20, it is likely that these slightly older estimates are more accurate and that John and Elizabeth were married before 1830.
