Biography
The Rankin family were hereditary pipers to the MacLeans of Duarte. After the Chiefs of Duart lost their possessions,the Rankin's became pipers to the Lairds of Coll(also MacLeans).
James was born in 1540. He passed away in 1600. (Source will be added by Howard Rankin Jr by 11 May 2018.)

This unsourced family tree for James Rankin, 1540-1600 (the husband of Jane Phelps, father of Andrew Moodie Rankin, 1570-1616) shows that he was the son of John James Rankin, 1520-1600, and Mary Polly Lineberger. FamilySearch Person: L2JB-GJX . The collection is unsourced, but may prove useful in further research. The line goes many generation back, to the mid 12th century.
