Biography

Mary was born on 17 December 1860 in Lyine, Western Australia.[1][2] She is the daughter of William Quinlan and Margaret McKeown.

She married James Johnson on 13 September 1879 in Beverley.[3]

James died in 1901 and Mary next married Thomas Wait in York in 1903.[4] Thomas died in 1910 and Mary married for a third time, in 1912 at Beverley, to Arthur Sydney Browning.[5]

Death removed another of the pioneers of the district on Tuesday afternoon last in the person of Mrs. A. L. Browning, of Jaoob's Well. Deceased had been ill some days and was being removed by car to the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hastings, when her demise occurred, death being due, we un-derstand, to a relapse upon an at-tack of pneumonia, Mrs. Browning was born in the York district 66 years ago, and at the age of 16 was married to James Johnson, after-ward settling with her husband in the Beverley district, where a family of five sons and three daughters was born.
All her children survive her and are well-known in this district ; they com-prise Harry, James, Frank, William, and Edward Johnson(sons); and Mrs. Harry Messenger, Mrs. Neil McKay, and Mrs. Tom Mead {daughters). James is particularly well-known to townsfolk, he being the blind traveller from the Maylands School, who pays periodical visits to the town in connection with that Institution's brush and mat making activities, and also as the advance representative of the English Concertina Band.
Mrs. Browning's first husband pre-deceased her in 1902, at the age of 63 years, and since then she has been twice married. In addition to her husband, and the family mentioned, she leaves about 35 grand-children. The funeral, which was attended by a large number of relatives and sympathising friends, took place in the Roman Catholic Cemetery yester--day morning, Father O'Callighan officiating.[6]
