Biography

Joseph was born on Jul 7, 1679 on Isle-aux-Grues and was baptized on Jul 8, 1679 in Cap St-Ignace[1]. He was the son of Anthoine Pépin (Pépin dit Lachance) and Marie Teste. He is the twin of Paul Pépin.

Joseph Lachance married Marguerite Fontaine. They registered a marriage contract on 24 Oct 1704 before Jacques Barbel (royal notary), whose office was in Quebec City.[2] The document reveals that Joseph was a boatman (maître de barque), at the time he got married. The religious wedding registry is missing but the ceremony most likely took place, shortly after the signature of the contract, in St-Jean, Isle d'Orléans, Québec, Canada, where the couple was living.

Joseph passed away on Jan. 24, 1721 and was buried the next day in the cemetery of St-Jean, Ile d'Orleans[3].

Michelle, thank you - that's very good. David has helped me before. Perhaps he would read both the baptism records (the Drouin one is very poor quality) and see if he can tell which is which. I'll pull the Drouin one and this one and ask him.

Hello Cindy

This is what I read of this record; " Le huitième jour du mois dAoust de l’année mil cent septente et neuf jay moy Morel _____ faisant les fonctions curiales dans toute sud a esté baptisé Joseph fils d’Anthoine _____La Chance et de Marie Teste sa femme habitant du_________ né le septième jour du mois de juillet de la meyme année. Le parrain a esté Mre ____ Bonne __ de grand ___ la marraine, Véronique Du___, veufve de Fiacre___ ? You might want to ask David Quénéhervé's help ; he is very good at deciphering old documents. I do not have access to Drouin or PRDH.

That record does not seem to be for this person. The father of that Joseph Lachance looks like David . . . not Antoine. And it's an entirely different original record than the one that Drouin has attached to him. PRDH and other Drouin records for his children definitely list him as Pepin and Pepin Lachance. Michelle if you have access to Drouin and PRDH, the sources are on the profile, or I would be happy to post images.

LNB = Lachance not Pépin; as a matter of fact the name Pépin does not appear anywhere on this record.

Pepin-769 and Pépin-118 appear to represent the same person because: "Baptism Of Son Gabriel"
