Welcome to the Homesteaders Project!

Our Mission

This project is specifically for the Homesteaders who applied for free land grants under the Homestead Act of 1862.

The Homestead Act was signed by Pres. Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862 and would remain in effect for more than 100 years. Its purpose was to offer public land grants to small farmers in order to settle the western United States.

Goals

Any improvements you can make to the profiles of people who homesteaded the West are welcome, but here are some specific goals we're working towards:

  1. Add profiles for your Homesteaders, checking for existing profiles to avoid duplication. If any duplicate profiles exist, request merges, starting with the oldest generation.
  2. If loaded by GEDCOM, use WikiTree Styles and Standards to clean up residue and broken links.
  3. Search out original rather than derivative documentation and add sources.
  4. Write comprehensive, well-sourced biographies.
  5. Add the Homesteaders template to the profiles along with any relevant categories.
  6. Make sure profiles of family members are correct and documented.

Project Box

Add this template to the top of the biography for your Homesteaders profiles where Westward Ho is a co-profile manager.

{{Westward Ho|sub-project=Homesteaders}}

Project Sticker

The project sticker is used to identify a person as a homesteader when their profile does not have (or need) the project as a profile manager (this will apply to 95% of all profiles).

... ... ... was a homesteader in the United States. Join the Homesteaders Project.

To add the basic sticker to a profile, place the following string in the text area of the profile somewhere under the ==Biography== heading:

{{Homesteaders}}

If you know where the person homesteaded, include the place name in the sticker code, like this:

{{Homesteaders|Frontier County, Nebraska}}

That will create a sticker like the one below, and it will add the profile to the Homesteaders category for the place where the person homesteaded.

... ... ... was a homesteader in Frontier County, Nebraska. Join the Homesteaders Project.

Project Member Sticker

To indicate on your member profile that you are a part of the Homesteaders project, add the following under ==Biography==

{{Member|Westward Ho|team=Homesteaders}}
And the following will appear on your profile
... ... ... is a member of the Westward Ho Project (Homesteaders).
