Biography

Possibly the ancestor of the Praers family of Bartholomey.

Possibly had a son named Paganus?[1]

Adam and his brother William, witnessed the grant by their father Richard of Noctorum, across the Mersey river from modern Liverpool, to Chester Abbey. This was recorded in a confirmation from about 1119, and so it happened before then.[2]

Adam first appears alone as a witness in a Cheshire charter made in the 1120s.[3]

According to Baraclough, (p.53) Adam does not appear after about 1145.

Older speculations about sons:

  • Roger? According to the speculative pedigree which Ormerod gives, Adam had a son Roger who lived in the time of King John. This is chronologically problematic, with at least one generation between them, and there appears to be no good contemporary evidence for this Roger.
  • Randle? Ormerod also notes (p.301) another proposed son named Randle (Ranulf) who is father of an heir Hasculf or Harscoit. However, as explained by Keats-Rohan, this Randle or Ranulf was a son of Matthew. See below.

In contrast, Keats-Rohan notes no evidence for direct successors until Phillip de Praers or Dexthorpe, who was also a contemporary of King John.

However, the following apparent brothers may well be the sons of Adam, both of whom are also associated with French records, and several parts of England:

  • Mathew de Praers was associated with the Earl of Cheshire, like Adam. According to Keats-Rohan this Matheus had a son and heir Ranulf (Randle) who succeeded by 1180, and another son Philip. So presumably, by noting that Adam might have been succeeded by a Philip, Keats-Rohan thinks Mathew might somehow be a successor of Adam.
  • Robert de Praers was apparently the brother of Matheus.

The mother of Matthew and Robert was named in French records as Petrosa, and their landlord who gave consent was the Earl of Chester.[4]
