Llewellyn Powers was born in Pittsfield, Somerset, Maine, USA. He was the son of Arba Powers and Naomi Matthews. He died in 1908.[1]

Llewellyn graduated from the Colburn Classical Institute, attended Colby University, graduated from the law department of Union University New York, was admitted to the bar in and commenced practice in Houlton, Maine, in January 1861. He was prosecuting attorney for Aroostook County (1864-71), collector of customs for the district of Aroostook, (1868-72) and a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1873-76, 1883, 1892, 1895). In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was elected Governor of Maine, serving (1896-1900). After his term as Governor, he was again elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles A. Boutelle and reelected to the Fifty-eighth, Fifty-ninth, Sixtieth Congresses, serving from 1901 until his death in 1908, at age 71.

Llewellyn married Virginia (Jennie) C. Hewes in 1863. In 1870, the couple was living in Houlton, Maine. [2]

By 1900, Llewellyn and his second wife, Mattie A., had been married for 13 years. They had five children: Walter A. (12), Pauline (10), Doris (8), Ralph (6), and Margaret (3). They resided in Houlton, Maine with their three servants and a governess for the children.[3]
