Biography

Note: Lawrence county Tennessee was organized in 1817 created in Part from the countries of Hickman and Maury.

1817 through 1820 Samuel A. and his family were living near Edward and Martha Poteet 's (Samuel A's brother's) family in Lawrence co. Tn. Edward & Martha were living in Alabama at this time.

Oct. 27, 1785 tax roll for Bedford co Va, listed William Poteet, James Poteet, Benjamin Poteet and Samuel Poteet. This is the same date that the Bedford/ Henry county line was moved to include the residents on the south side of the Stanton River in Bedford co due to the county seat was remote to them. A petition for this was signed on Nov 23, 1782 by residents on the south side of the Stranton River which included James and William Poteet.( this is believed to be William and son, James, Later James was listed in North Carolina, as Captain James H. Poteet and later listed as Col. James Poteet. Col. James H. Poteet had a son named James H. Poteet. Public records sometimes listed them as Cap. or Col. James H. and James H or James Sen. and James Jr. This James H. Poteet died in North Carolina and his son James H. Poteet Jr. died in Georgia.)

1820 Lawrence county census (M thru R) http://www.tngenweb.org/lawrence/census3.htm (Note: A cousin believed these three were James Poteet and his brothers Samuel A. and William which were listed in the 1818-19 Tax list for Lawrence county Tennessee- There was a second 1820 Lawrence co census which agrees with the above census except the last name was Poteet & James and Samuel A. was not listed. The 1830 census or Lawrence co. , Tennessee listed only William and his son William Jr., James & Samuel A. (This Samuel A may have been Jr.)was not listed. (Note another family researcher believed that Samuel A. , James and William Poteet were brothers not father and sons. The 1820 Census listed Samuel A., William and James Poteet. The 1830 census listed only William..

Lauderdale County Tennessee records (some list information as Lauderdale co Tn . and others list it as Lauderdale co. Alabama)- Ellis Thomas sale of estate includes Samuel Potete, James Poteete and William Poteete. Date signed Oct.24,1820.

Other notes: Voter census for Lawrence county Tennessee 1818 included Samuel Poteet, James Poteet and William. Samuel D. Poteet was mentioned (son of Edward Poteet in "History of Tennessee" pages752 & 756 and the Poteet family on page 751. This book found in the Tennessee State Library)


The second 1820 census for Lawrence co. Tn. found as follows : William Poteet- Males under 10 -1 , females under 10 -1, Males 26-45 -1 , females 16 to 26 -1, Samuel A. Poteet Males under 10 - 2 females 10 to 16 -3 Male 45 & over - 1 females 26 to 45 -1

1826 Lawrence co. Tennessee Tax List Listed William Poteet Sr. and William Poteet Jr.

1830 Lawrence county Ten. Census - head of households http://www.tngeweb.org/lawrence/1830m-z.htm - listed William Poteet There was a female living that was about the age of Samuel A."s wife. This may mean Samuel A. may have died between 1820 and 1830.

Samuel A. most likely served in the service during the Rev, War. I will add the information I found but do not know the Samuel to which this belongs... Potet, Samuel general index card #3881 4 New York Regiment Revolutionary War - Samuel entered the service as Private and discharged as Sargent.
