Biography

Edward POTEET was born in 1764. He married Martha on March 22, 1786, in Burke, North Carolina. They had seven children in 14 years. He died on October 19, 1836, in Lexington, Alabama, at the age of 72. Edward was born in Bedford co. Va.. lived in Burke co. North Carolina at enlistment ( records show that he was in Burke co. North Carolina 1786, 1778, 1788 and 1790) and sometime after 1790 he moved his family to Kentucky. Then returned to S.C., then to North (Probably NC) next moved to Giles County, TN. for 2 years and about 1820 moved to Alabama. Widow applied 28 Jan. 1842, Lauderdale co. Al. aged 76, solder married Martha__________ 22 March 1786 in Burke Co. NC and soldier died 19 Oct. 1836 a son Samuel D. Poteete made aff'dt 20 July 1843 and stated widow died 22 May 1842 leaving Children: Samuel D. Poteete of Lauderdale co. Al., James Poteete, Nancy wife of John Horn, Elizabeth widow of Thomas Horn,a citizen of Lawrence County Tennessee William Poteete of Giles co. TN. and Jimsey wife of Jesse Lindsey of Marion co. Al. It also states that a daughter died at age 2. 1813 Giles co. TN. " Old man Patite first settled on Locus Hill, where Silas Flourmay settled. from - (Giles co. TN. History, Settlement & Early History - Blooming Grove Church and Leatherwood Creek)) Edward and Martha's children were: William Poteet married Ruthey Bird. James Poteet, Nancy Poteet married John Horn. Elizabeth Poteet married Thomas Horn, Samuel D. Poteet married (unknow) (2) married Margaret Snodgrass. Jane Jinsey Poteet married Jesse Linsey and (unknown Daughter died at age 2.)

Horne family spelled their with an e-Horne not Horn.

Information from the Hiram Poteet family Indicted Edward middle name is Ned and Martha's maiden name is Criswell. James Pitman wrote: Martha's maiden name was Criswell and her father was James Robert Carswell 1745-1820, his father was James Carswell 1723-1790, his mother was Barbara Young born 1725 in Scotland and her mother was Caroline Brown, she died in 1790, whose father was Thomas, born 1691 in Scotland , died 1750 in West Virginia, her mother was Ruth Large born 1722 in Pennsylvania., died 1763 in North Carolina.

EDWARD POTEET'S REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION ABSTRACT. " Poteete, Edward, wife Martha, SC line, W10853, soldier applied 9 Oct 1834 Lauderdale Co. Al. aged about70, soldier was born in Bedford Co. Va. (date not given), he lived in Burk co. NC at enlistment and afterwards moved to Ky., Then returned to SC, then North (probably NC) Then moved to Giles County, Tn. for 2 years and about 1820 moved to Alabama. Widow applied 28 Jan. 1842, Lauderdale Co. Al. aged 76, soldier married Martha _________22 March 1786 in Burk Co. NC and soldier died 19 Oct. 1836 a son Samuel D.
