Simon Samuel Porter was born on March 17, 1887, in New Brunswick, Canada. He was the son of James Porter and Eliza Arbeau, his father, James, was 57 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 37. He married Grace May Arbeau on June 9, 1908, in Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada. They had two children during their marriage. He died as a young father on August 17, 1917, in Loos-en-Gohelle, Pas-de-Calais, France, killed in action, at the age of 30, and was buried in Loos British Cemetery, Loos-en-Gohelle, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
