Biography

John Franklin Porter was born on the 11th of September, 1855 in Benton, Oregon Territory. His parents were McCauley Porter and Martha Ann (Winkle) Porter. Both of whom crossed the plains in the same wagon train on the Oregon Trail in 1848.

John married Mary Rebecca Angel on the 13th of November, 1876 in Umatilla, Oregon.[1] Together they had four children. Thomas Franklin Porter (1877-1950), Iva Reen Porter (1879-1945), Fred Monroe Porter (1882-1972) and McCauley Porter (1890-1969).

In the 1900 US Census John is listed as the 45 year old white married head of household in Willamett, Bellfountain, and Monroe Precincts, Benton, Oregon. Living with him are his 43 year old wife Mary R. Porter, 23 year old son T. Frank Porter, 18 year old son Fred M. Porter and 10 year old son McCauley Porter.[2]

In the 1910 US Census John is listed as the 54 year old white married head of household in Willamette, Benton, Oregon. Living with his 52 year old wife Mary Porter. Both of whom were born in Oregon with John's father being born in Kentucky and his mother in Alabama.[3]

In the 1920 US Census John is listed as a 64 year old white married head of household living with his 62 year old wife Mary R. Porter and their 42 year old son Thomas F. Porter and 10 year old grandson Charles F. Porter.[4]

John's wife Mary Rebecca passed away on the 18th of March, 1929 in Portland, Oregon.

When John was elderly and living alone at his home in S.E. Portland he sold his home to his grandson Leroy McCauley Porter and moved into the Oregon Masonic Home in Forest Grove, Oregon.[5][6]
