Biography

Notables Project
Roy Pope Jr. is Notable.

Born in a U.S. Army hospital in Calambrone, Pisa, Italy, Roy Dalton Pope, Jr., is the eldest son of Roy Dalton Pope, of Columbus, Georgia, and Betty Loryce Bolton, of Mobile, Alabama. Since 2003, he has devoted anywhere from five to twelve hours per day, nearly every day, towards conducting genealogical research along all lines of his ancestry.

Heraldic Achievement

Arms Assumed: 05 Feb 2021: Whereas Citizens of the United States of America are free to assume heraldic arms of their own design, I herewith give notice to all that I, Roy Dalton Pope, Jr., have assumed the heraldic arms and devices as described by the blazon and depicted in the emblazonment given below—
Escutcheon—Or, two chevrons gules; on a chief azure, between two bald eagles’ heads erased, proper, langued gules and respectant, two anchors in saltire or.
Crest—A cubit arm erect, habited gules, cuffed argent, holding in the hand proper and by a chain a pair of scales or.
Helm—Silver, the visor, eye-guards, nose-guard, and ventaille border and studs (or nails) of gold, affronté and with nine bars.[1]
Torse and Mantle—Gules, or.
Orders and Honors—Knight, Grand Officer, Royal Order of Golden Fire Dog, Sefwi Obeng-Mim, Ghana, granted by Oheneba Nana Kwame Obeng II. (Other Orders and Honors not shown in the Heraldic Achievement.)
Motto—ANTE OMNIA AMARI (Before All Else, Be Armed).

Religion

Pope was raised and baptized a Southern Baptist. In 1995, he was ordained to the ministry and served as an assistant minister for several years. That same year, he received his PhD in Religion, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Metaphysics.

Military Service

Pope is a Cold War veteran of the U.S. Army. He served as a chaparral missile crewman, and received an honorable discharge at the rank of Specialist (SP4).

Business

From 2001 to 2013, Pope was President and CEO of Busaba's Thai Cuisine, in Mobile, Alabama. During that same period of time, he was the owner-operator of Blue Aegis Software and Marketing, a software and website development company. From 2004 to 2015, he was the Managing Member of Collector, LLC, which was a real estate investment company.[2][3][4][5]
In December of 2004, Pope was present in Southeast Asia when the Great Tsunami struck.[6] Upon his return to Alabama, in January of 2005, he formed and served as President of the Southeast Asian Adversity Relief Foundation (SAARF) - a short-term charity established for collecting and providing essential items which were shipped to Southeast Asia to provide assistance to the victims of the tsunami.

Historic Building Restoration

From 2000 to 2001, Pope worked daily on the restoration and rehabilitation of the circa. 1893 historic Drinkard-Scheuermann Building in downtown Mobile, Alabama. This building is included in the Lower Dauphin Street Historic District (National Register of Historic Places, Reference #82002059). In 2009, he received an Historic Building Award Plaque, awarded by the Mobile Historic Development Commission in Mobile, Alabama.[7] Pope mounted the plaque to the facade of the historic building, where it still hangs to this day.

Second Amendment Advocacy

Pope is an outspoken advocate for U.S. Second Amendment Rights. He has conducted numerous radio and television news interviews in support of Second Amendment Rights, including the rights to open carry, and to permitless carry.[8] He even offered substantial discounts to customers of his restaurant who open-carried inside his establishment, as well as to law enforcement officers and active military personnel.
In December of 2003, Pope used his firearm in the citizen's arrest of a strong-arm robber.[9] In June of 2006, he used his firearm again to subdue and make citizen's arrest of an armed robber.[10][11][12] He also used his firearm in the citizen's arrest of armed assailants in various unpublicized events.
In 2006, a newspaper clipping regarding the citizen's arrest made by Pope was put on display in the Mobile Police History Museum.[13] It is unknown to me whether-or-not it is still on display to this day.

Environment Protection Advocacy

In 2010, following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Pope video-recorded the oil spill along the coastline from Pascagoula, Mississippi, to Fairhope, Alabama. He documented damages caused to wildlife and the environment, and used his findings in a town-hall meeting hosted by U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, speaking with him directly regarding the urgency in cleaning up the spill and restoring the Gulf Coast.

My Y-DNA

Over the years, I’ve been called many things: "dog, turkey, squirrely," et al. I’m just a few candles on my cake shy of family members bestowing upon me the seemingly hereditary moniker of "old goat", as they did my grandfather. However, with "in-your-face" delight, DNA tests confirm that I am, indeed, human.

I have taken the mtDNA test at Ancestry, and the Y-DNA test at FTDNA. Below is the path to my FTDNA results.

Hello Roy - your profile is in the top level category "Orders of Knighthood" which is a container category for the specific orders of knighthoods. I would be grateful if you would remove it from there, and if you wish to have a specific category set up for the Royal Order of the Golden Firedog, we can facilitate that.

Best wishes, Jo, England Project Categorisation team.

Please excuse my delay in responding to you. I will remove, per requested. Please do set up a category for the Royal Order of the Golden Firedog so that I and other Brother Knights of the Order may be added to that category. Kind Regards, H.E. Roy D. Pope, Jr., KGOG

Hello Roy,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
