It was really a great experience! I think it's good to know how to work at varying speeds, sometimes fast, sometimes slow and cautious. I learned a lot about using various apps to create a profile quickly. Now I have a few months work ahead to clean them all up.

Hi Charlie,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Jen,

1. Yes, I'd like to continue on the same team. 2. Well, as a member, I'd like the requirement to be one that allows me to stay... see #3. :-) As someone who has run other kinds of volunteer efforts, I suggest a low bar for membership but recognition within the project for those who do more. 3. I'd say an hour or three a month so far, but I'd like to spend more time if I can figure out what to work on. 4. At my current stage of working in WikiTree, I could use more direction from the project as to areas where work is needed. Otherwise I tend to just work on profiles connected to my family.

Hi Charlie,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi Jen,

Your note is timely for me - and not just because of the time that has passed. :-)

I recently started thinking about the Ireland project and the fact that I had joined it but never got any team assignment and was not asked to do anything. When I checked I saw that I was listed on the Laois county team - which I didn't know. I also asked some questions on G2G and learned that project members are just supposed to self-assign stuff out of the list of items on the team. All of this actually happened in the last couple of weeks!

So while I'm overall happy with the team, I can't say that I participated in anything. What I'd like to say, as someone who has led a lot of collaborative (software) teams, is that some people need to be asked to do something while others jump in and do it. Neither personality type is "better" and any team that wants to work with volunteers has to be able to deal with both types and anything in between. Of course, I also noticed that the team has no leader, so that probably explains a lot.

For now, I plan to do things that help me with my own ancestors. I asked and got a category created for the townland where my ancestors lived and I'm trying to figure out what else I can do with my own folks, which also helps the project.

So, answering your four questions...

1. As stated, I'm basically happy with the assignment. 2. I wish there were an active, qualified leader, someone who holds a vision for the project and can help members orient themselves toward that vision. I have some time but I haven't been around wikitree long enough to be that guy. 3. Yes, let me know what's needed for the newsletter. 4. I don't use either of those. To be honest, I didn't know they existed till about a week ago, which I think says something. I would sign up for both and see which works best.

Hi Charlie,

Here is a FAQ sheet that will give you information about the County teams, and also about the project's Discord group: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kEuTPjSNxltR3rKGRHkK29h7y_xFJBNu/view.

We are just in the process of starting to put a newsletter group together, so you'll hear from me soon about that! If there in any other way I may be of help, please don't hesitate to contact me.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Hi Cheryl,

I feel like I'm doing well, even though I am being fairly deliberate about it. I'm transitioning from being dependent on commercial sources to finding ones that can be used by anyone, which seems like the best way to work on WikiTree.

One thing I'm wondering about is whether to leave things unsourced for a while or to post my Ancestry and FindMyPast sources along with a note that I'm looking for replacement sources. Do people ever do that?

Hi Laura, Thanks for the greeting. I do have a "getting started" sort of question.

I have trees on Ancestry and FindMyPast and some entries on FamilySearch. Right now, the public ancestry tree is the best sourced.

Can you point me to something that will tell me how to take my ancestry sources and move them to WikiTree or failing that point me to an example of good sourcing someplace?

TIA, Charlie

Hi Charles, you are welcome.

The only way that I know of to move the sources from Ancestry is one by one. I have a large tree on Ancestry too. I also use Findmypast and FamilySearch. We try to use free sources on WikiTree as much as we can so that everyone has access. There are times that you can only find them on FindmyPast or Ancestry. I usually create a share link for the digital images on Ancestry to add to my citation so that anyone can view it. It is okay to use Ancestry and FindmyPast as long as it is a record and not a family tree.

This page talks about formatting sources. There are also examples on the right side of every profile when you are in edit mode. The other thing that I do is go to the projects for the area I am searching for sources in and use the places they use to source 9 out of 10 times they are free. Just click on a badge and it will take you to the project page which will list sources or a link to a page of sources.

If you have any questions or still have trouble finding sources let me know.

Hi Laura,

I replicated a few sources for my father on FamilySearch. Now that profile has two source citations (https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Poole-6283&public=1). I did one inline and one as a bulleted note at the bottom. Using this as an example, I have a few questions. :-)

1. Are my citations OK? I just copied them directly.

2. When would you use each format? Would you mix them on the the same profile?

3. What is the empty <references /> element for?

If you can clear those bits up, I think I'm ready to try a bigger experiment.

It seems to me that I could programmatically transform at least some kinds of ancestry source citations into the corresponding family search citations. I say that because I was able to look at my ancestry citations and easily figure out how to find them on FamilySearch. It wouldn't work for all sources in ancestry because they sometimes combine things that are actually separate origiinal sources. So it would have to be some thing I used one case at a time, which I think is OK. I may fool around with that if I get hooked on this site. :-)

Hi Charlie,

One of the reasons I love FamilySearch is its copy/paste citation ability. Those are perfect and you already know how to inline cite, that's great. You can list them either way although, inline citations are preferred. As long as they have them bullet lists will do. Yes, you can mix them and use both, you just would not want to inline cite and bullet list the same source, I believe I probably did not have to tell you that though.

The references / tag has to be the first thing below the header Sources . That tag is how the system is programmed to pick up the inline ref and /ref tags (I am having to leave the symbols out it is trying to format my comment) and place the sources between them below the Sources header. If it wasn't there your inline citations would not show up.

I like the way you think. I had not thought to do that with Ancestry and FamilySearch before. It looks like it works I think I am going to have to try that, Thanks for the tip. WikiTree comes with a Warning (Can be highly Addictive). 😏
