Pohto The body of Pvt. Adelbert E.J. Pohto, who died Nov 16, 1944, on Leyte, arrived here Tuesday and military services have been planned. The rites will be at 2 p.m. in Fairport, where friends may call beginning tonight and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Pohto of N. State St., Pvt Pohto was signed as a litter bearer in the Army, but he volunteered to replace one of the aid men who had been wounded in action. He was killed by enemy sniper fire as he attempted to remove a wounded soldier of his platoon to a place of safety. On Feb. 8, 1945, his parents received the Presidential Citation and Purple Heart award which he had earned. Near that time also, they received a personal letter from Gen. Douglas MacArthur which read as follows: "In the death of your son, Pvt. Adelbert E.J. Pohto, you have my heartfelt sympathy. His service was characterized by his devotion to our beloved country and in his death, we have lost a gallant comrade in arms. Very Faithfully. Gen. Douglas MacArthur." Pvt. Pohto was born Sept. 27, 1925 in Fairport. He attended McKinley school and enlisted in the Army during his junor year at Harding High School. He trained at Camp Fannin, Tex., before being sent overseas. Before going to the Philippines he was in the Hawaiian Islands. He was a Lutheran by faith, having been confirmed at the Suomi Lutheran Church, Fairport. He was active in the Sea Scouts in Painesville. Surviving besides his parents are a brother, Richard, grandparents, MR. and Mrs. Isaac Pohto of 433 Sixth St., Fairport. The military escort with the body is Sgt. John A. Wilson of the Distribution Depot at Columbus.
