Mammy Pleasant was an African American abolitionist who used her considerable fortune to further the goals of the movement in the 19th century.
After arriving in California in 1852, she rose in business to amass a multi-million dollar fortune. Her 1866 lawsuit ended segregation on public transportation in San Francisco, California. [1]
