Benjamin (also known as Benn) was born in on 24 Jul 1822 and christened on 8 September 1822, in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England.[1] He was the son of Samuel Pitman and Maria Davis. He married Jane Bragg on 4 July 1849, and the couple had three children.
Benn and his family emigrated to United States in 1853. [2] The family settled in Cincinnati, Ohio where Benn set up a Phonographic Institute based on his brother, Sir Isaac Pitman's system of shorthand. Benn became an important figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement in the United States and was a competent wood carver.
Benn passed away on 28 December 1910, in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. [3]
