Golden Wedding Notice

Mr. and Mrs. William Tonks celebrated their golden wedding at their residence, 17, Thompson street, on Sunday. William Tonks is the eldest son of the late Enoch and Susan Tonks, early pioneers' of the "Forties," and was born in Wellington in 1559. His wife is the eldest daughter of tho late Mr. and Mrs. Pinker, and was born in Brighton, England, in 1858, and arrived in New Zealand, with her parents in the ship SS. Strathnever on the 31st August, 1874. There are eight living children, five daughters and three sons, nineteen living grand children, and one great-grandchild.

Another child is showing on NZBDM ^[10] to them but the DOB is coming up as 01/01/1897. His military file shows he is the child of a Christchurch (later Hawera) couple with the same names.

   OBITUARY-MRS. WILLIAM TONKS, The many friends of Mrs. William Tonks, of Wellington, will regret to learn of her death which occurred at 17 Thomson Street last week. Mrs. Tonks was the daughter of the late Mr. Alfred Pinker, Native schoolmaster at Maketu, Bay of Islands, and was born at Brighton, England, in 1858. She arrived in New Zealand in the Stratnaver in 1874 at the age of 16 years. On December 21. 1880, she was married to William, eldest son of the late Enoch Tonks, by the late Rev. Williams. She was a woman with a wonderful spirit of kindliness, and her cheerfulness and courage were an inspiration .to her friends, who will feel much sympathy with her family in their loss. She is survived by her^ husband and eight children, three sons, Percy (Wanganui), Stanley (Wellington), Leonard (Dunedin), and five daughters, Mesdames R. Bennett, J. Rouse, L. Flyger, W. O. Urquhart, all of Wellington, and Mrs. V. W. Wright, of Glenbrook. There are twenty grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
