Biography

This profile is part of the Pike Name Study.
He is the younger brother of Captain Zebulon Montgomery Pike, who was famous for naming Pike's Peak on the Expedition he led into the southwest in the years 1806-07. His brother Zebulon later, promoted to Brigadier General, died of his :wounds suffered in Canada (in 1813) during the War of 1812.
James Brown Pike never served in the military due to the lingering effects of TB he endured all his life. Many of the Pike family suffered and perished from this disease in their family home in Indiana.
James' first born son, William Montgomery Pike, was born out of wedlock but raised with his siblings.
Sarah married William M Foster, so Sarah & Harriet were sisters-in-laws. They were with The Forlorn Hope, (the group that went out to try to rescue the Donner Party).
Harriet Murphy Pike had to leave her children Naomi & Catherine behind with her mother Harriet arrived in Marysville in 1846.
Lavina Murphy who tried to keep baby Catherine Pike alive by feeding wheat flour & melted snow, by a teaspoon amount daily. Although Catherine Pike did not survive Naomi did live.
Jame's first born son, William Pike was killed earlier when a hand gun went off accidentally. He was highly thought of & respected. Notes of 22 Oct. The hand gun was an old fashioned Pepper Box Gun. He was reportedly laid to rest in Truckee Meadows as the first snows began to fall.
The Murphy's have always seen well and favorably known in the Best Of Society Of Calif. Prior to the discovery of gold they lived about 3 miles above Marysville that bore the name Nye's Ranch. He died at Kirkville,
