Bernardo Pignatelli was born about 1080 near Pisa. His father was Godius.[1][2]
In 1115 he is attested as subdeacon at Pisa.[3]
He was ordained to the priesthood in the 1130s and entered the Cistercian monastery of Clairvaux in 1138, returning to Italy to lead the Cistercian community in Scandriglia.[1]
Though he was not a cardinal he was elected pope on 15 February 1145 taking the name Eugene III.[2][1] He was consecrated in the Farfa Abbey north of Rome. He lived at Viterbo and then Siena before moving to France.[1]
In June 1148 he returned to Italy to reside at Viterbo then on 8 April 1149 moved into Ptolemy II's fortress in Tusculum, near Rome. It was here that he met with returning crusaders Louis VII of France and Eleanor of Aquitaine.[1]
He returned to Rome at the end of November 1149 until he returned to Tivoli where he died on 8 July 1153.[1] Throughout his papacy he wore the coarse habit of a Cistercian monk under his robe. He was buried in the Vatican.[1]
