Gherardo Caccianemici dal Orso was born in Bologna, the son of Orso Caccianemici.[1][2]
He was a canon of the Basilica di San Frediano in Lucca.[3]
He was elected pope on 12 March 1144 and consecrated the same day, taking the name Lucius II.[1][2]
He died on 15 February 1145 at San Gregorio Magno al Celio from injuries received from a thrown stone during a battle against Roman Senators.[2]
