Biography

Birth

The birth of Betsy Philbrick was recorded at Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts), with a date of 22 Mar 1795, as the daughter of Michael Philbrick and Jane (Snow) Philbrick.^[1] The death record of her daughter Mary says that her mother was born at St. Albans, Maine.^[2] See the Research Notes below.

Marriage

Betsey Philbrick married Elisha Chenery at Jay, Maine, on 24 Dec 1826.^[3]

Death

A gravestone at the Waters Hill Cemetery in Livermore, Maine, says that Betsey Chenery died on 8 Feb 1890 at the age of 95 years, 11 months (overstated by one year).^[4]

Research Notes

• Whether Betsey was born at Livermore, where her birth was recorded, or at St. Albans, as claimed in her daughter's death record, is uncertain. It was a common practice in the place and time for people who moved to a town to have the names of all their children recorded there, including those who had been born elsewhere, and usually without naming their birthplaces.
• The censuses from 1850 through 1880 and her gravestone all make Betsey Philbrick a year older than her birth record indicates. The birth record is likely correct, and those ages are thus all in error; she had a sister, Ginny Philbrick, born on 30 Jul 1793, who lived until 1812,^[1] and a March 1794 birth date for Betsey—as implied by the censuses and computed from her age at her death from her gravestone—would be just eight months later.
