Biography

Martha (Perdue) Hale was born about 1766 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, daughter of William Uriah Perdue Jr (1735 - 1820) and Edith Mary (Hale) Powell (1735 - 1785).[1]

I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors; nothing doubting but at the general resurrections I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate with which it hath pleased God to bless me in this life. I give, demise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form; vis: First, of all my just debts and funeral expenses to be paid out of my money or levied out of my personal property. Second, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son, William Hale, one Negro girl and her two boys (viz) Chain, Lewis, Floyd; also one still and still tubs, also one bed and its furniture; also five head of horses, all the cattle except one that is to hereafter devised and all the hogs; also all the farming utensils; also all the grain that is now on said place where William Hale lives; also all the house hold and kitchen furniture; also two head of sheep. Third, I also give and bequeath unto my well loved daughter Phoebe McClaughterty (Sp) one bed and its furniture and also one cow and one sheep. Fourth, I also give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Polly Williams' daughters (viz) Margaret Burk Williams and Martha Ann Williams and all the girls if any there should be hereafter one Negro girl named Isabel; the said Isabel is to be hired or put with my daughter Polly Williams to assist her at the discretion of my executors; if hired, the money to be put on the i interests for the benefit of my granddaughters above mentioned; also one bed and its furniture. Fifth, and lastly, I constitute make and ordain my friend John McClaughterty, Jr., the sole executor of this my last will and testament and do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other forms and testaments, legacies and wills, bequeaths and executors by one in anywise before named, willed and bequeathed, ratified; and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th of December 1834.
