Mary was born about 1895 in Kentucky to Jacob Penman and Bertie Harlan. She was enumerated in the 1910 US Census for Boyle County with her Bertha Harlan who was 33 and divorced. She was a cook for a private family. Mary E. was 15 and John H. 9. [1]
She married John F. Coughlin under the name "Elizabeth" 16 May 1917 in Hamilton, Ohio. She was 20 years old and her parents were Jacob Penman and Bertha Harlan. [2]
She was enumerated in the 1930 US Census as "Mary" living with her husband John in Hamilton, Ohio. She was 33 years old, no occupation but her husband was a switcher on the railroad. There does not appear to be any children. [3]
