Biography

Mungo was born about 1786 to John Penman and Janet Smith and baptised 9 Nov 1786 in Temple, Midlothian. [1]

Mungo enlisted in the 55th Regiment of Foot on 29 Jan 1810 in Woodbridge. He was described as 5'7", stout build, round face, fresh complexion, grey eyes and light hair. He was 22 at enlistment.[2]

While station at St. Hilier, Jersey, he married Mary Ann Duval on the 26 Sep 1818. "Sargeant Mungo Penman of the 55th Regiment of Foot and Mary Ann Duval of the Parish of St. Oeun were married on the 26th day of September, one thousand, eight hundred, and eighteen."[3] She passed away and was buried 25 Nov 1818 in St. Hilier "Mary Ann Duval, wife of Mungo Penman Sgt in His Majesty's 55th Regiment of Foot was buried on the 25th November 1818.[4]

He married Elisabeth Penman 29 Mar 1819 in Inveresk and Musselburgh. [5]

Mungo was enumerated on the 1841 Scotland Census living in Lumphinnans Colliery in Balingray, Fife. He was 54 and a Coal Grieve at the Colliery. He was living with his wife Elizabeth 45 and children: James 17, John 12, Mary 9, and Duncan 5. They have two boarders: john Leitch 22, and Margaret Munroe 19. [11]

Mungo was enumerated in the 1851 Scotland Census living in Lumphinnans, Balingray, Fife. He was the Clerk for the Lumphinnans Colliery and 64 years of age. He was living with his wife Elizabeth, aged 56 and the following children: James 28 born in Cockpen, William 15 born in Auchterderran, and Mary 19 born in Auchterderran. He also has grandson Mungo aged 5, born in Beath. [9]

Mentioned in the marriage license of his son, John in 1862. His son certifies that his father Mungo and mother Elizabeth were born in Scotland. [12]

Research Notes

It isn't certain that Mungo went to Kentucky with his son or whether he was just mentioned in the marriage license.
