Daniel Payne was an American bishop, educator, college administrator and author. He was one of the original founders of Wilberforce University, the first HBCU to be owned and operated by Black Americans, and served as the second president of that University. Payne Theological Seminary in Greene County, Ohio, is named for him.[1]
Daniel Payne was born in 1811. He was the son of London and Martha Payne.[2]
He passed away in 1893, was buried at Laurel Cemetery in City of Baltimore located by Bel Air Road and may have had his body moved with his monument to Laurel Cemetery in Johnsville, Carroll County, Maryland. [3]
There is a record of a London & Martha Payne, free people of color, who paid taxes in Charleston, South Carolina located in Family Search.[4] This record very likely belongs to his parents. However, it is currently not attached to an individual profile.
