George Paulet, 12th Marquess of Winchester was the first surviving son of Norton Paulet and Jane Morley[1]
He was born on 7th June 1722[1]
and baptised at St.James, Piccadilly, (St James, Westminster) on 29 June 1722[2]
He married Martha Ingoldsby, daughter of Thomas Ingoldsby and Anne Limbrey, by licence[3] on 7 January 1762 at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Dinton, Buckinghamshire[4].
George held a number of court posts in his lifetime[5] . On 29 October 1750 he was appointed as an Extra Gentleman Usher Daily Waiter to Frederick Prince of Wales and served until the princes death in 1751. From 1758 to 1772, he was a Gentleman Usher Quarterly Waiter to Frederick's widow, Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales. In 1760 he was granted the office of Lieutenant of the Tower of London[6] From 1765-1782 he was Groom Porter in the Royal Court[7]
In 1761 George was appointed High Sheriff of Southampton(Hampshire)[8]
George held the titles of Vice-Admiral of Dorset and Vice-Admiral of Hampshire from 1797 until his death in 1800[9]
George served as the Member of Parliament for Winchester from 1765 - 1774[7].
He gained the title of 12th Marquess of Winchester on 24 Dec 1794 following the death of his third cousin once removed Harry Paulet, the 6th Duke of Bolton[1].
He died on 22 April 1800 at Amport House[1] and was succeeded by his son Charles.
George was buried on 5th May 1800 at Amport, Hampshire, England[10]
George's will is dated 10 June 1800 and is available from the National Archives.[11]In it he leaves £100 to Lord Henry Paulet, to his butler Joseph ???? £50 per annum and the remainder of the estate to Charles Ingoldsby Paulet (named as sole executor).
