Biography

Sophia Ricketts Pattle was the youngest child of James and Adeline Pattle. She was born on March 19, 1829, in Calcutta, India.[1][2]

She married Sir John Warrender Dalrymple on June 7, 1847, in Middlesex, England.[3]

Sir John was with the Bengal Civil Service. He was the son of Maj-Gen Sir John and Charlotte Warrender. He succeeded as the 7th Baronet Dalrymple, North Berwick on April 27, 1867.

John and Sophia were living in India with brother-in-law John Jackson when their first child was born.

  • The couple’s first child Hew Cameron was born April 21, 1848, in Calcutta, India. He was baptized a few days later on April 24th.

Letters from her brother-in-law, John Jackson, to his wife, Maria, spoke about his nephews struggle with his health the first year of his life.

  • Their daughter Virginia Julian was born in 1850 in Bengal, India. She married Sir Francis Henry Champneys 1st Baronet Champneys on September 12, 1876, at British Embassy, Paris, France. They had three children Montague Weldon, Margaret De L’Etang and John Dalrymple.

Montague “Weldon” married first Anne Spencer Pratt. Pratt died March 3, 1868. Weldon then married Norma Russell in 1878. He inherited the title 2nd Baronet Champneys in 1930. He did not have any children, so the baronetcy ended with him. Margaret married Eric George Southam on July 3, 1915, in London, England. John was a Lieutenant 6th battalion 17th Regiment of Foot. He was in active service in WW1. He died from his wounds on November 22, 1915, in France. He was twenty-six years old.

In 1851 the census has John and Sophia living in Hanover Square, Middlesex, England. But by 1854 they were back living in India when their third child was born.

  • Son Walter Layard was born January 6, and baptized May 5, 1854, in Calcutta, India. He married Alice Mary Clifford. Daughter of Major-General Sir Henry Hugh Clifford and his wife Lady Josephine Elizabeth Anstice. Walter succeeded to the title of 8th Baronet Dalrymple, North Berwick on December 28, 1888. In 1889 his name was legally changed to Walter Hamilton-Dalrymple. The couple had five children. Agnes Mary, Sybil Mary, Marjorie Louisa, Hew Clifford and John Raphael.

Agnes married Commander Richard Eustice Hollings and they had three children. Sybil Mary entered the nunnery and was later known as “Mother Mary St. Hugh.” Marjorie was in the Voluntary Aid Detachment and received the British War Medal and Victory medal. Hew Clifford married Anna Dorothia Dyce Nicol Thorne, and they had four children. Hew succeeded as the 9th Baronet Dalrymple. John was a Lieutenant with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action on April 23, 1915 and was buried in Belgium. He was twenty-five years old.

By 1861 John and Sophia were living in Greenwich, Kent, England. They would not return to India as residents again.

Records show that their son, Hew Cameron, was baptized again on December 31, 1867, in Brighton, Sussex. He must have been ill because he passed away in March 1868. He was nineteen years old.

Sir John died on December 28, 1888, in East Lothian, Scotland. He was sixty-four years old.

Sophia “Lady Dalrymple” died June 16, 1911, in Monte Carlo. She was buried on May 22nd in Camden, London, England. She was seventy-seven years old. ~Deborah Spooner 2022
