Biography

Louisa Colebrooke Pattle was the seventh child of James and Adeline Pattle. She was born October 5th and baptized on October 21, 1821. She was most likely named after James’s sister, Louisa, who died a few days after her second birthday.

Louisa married Henry Vincent Bayley who was the seventh son of William Butterworth Bayley and Anne Augusta Jackson. The marriage took place on December 6, 1838, in Calcutta, India. Henry was a judge in Calcutta, India where the couple lived.

Together they had four children.

*Their daughter Adeline Anne was born October 22, 1842, at Fort William, Calcutta, West Bengal, India. She was baptized a month later November 29th. Adeline married William Waddell Fullarton MacTier on April 21, 1863, in Barrackpore, India. They had seven children together: William Butterworth was born in 1865 in England. He married Ann Isabel Marjory. He died October 20, 1933, in St Andrews, England. He was sixty-eight years old. Henry Mckinnon born July 21, 1866, in Blairgowrie, Perth, Scotland. He entered the 39th Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army in 1891 and was promoted to Major in 1907. In 1913 he was 2nd command of the 2nd Battalion. He was killed in action on March 12, 1915, in Chapelle, Eureet-Loir, Centre, France. He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was forty-nine years old. Anthony Douglas was born December 27, 1867, in Blairgowie, Perth, Scotland. He married Ethel Louise Wilson Waddell, daughter of Samuel Waddell and Maria Caroline Mackay. They were married on December 6, 1940, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Anthony was the Vice-President of Canadian Pacific Railway. The couple had two children William Stewart Mackay and Adeline Waddell. William married Dorothy Martin and they had two children, Anthony Ian and Edward Stewart. William was a Colonel with the Canadian Corps and was wounded in 1915, and in 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross for “conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.” Adeline married Brigadier Donald Alexander White, and they had three children Diana Bayley, Gavin Donald, and Douglas. Anthony Douglas died December 6, 1940. He was seventy-three years old. Maria Louisa was born June 11, 1869, in Persie, Perth, Scotland. She died April 23, 1876. She was six years old. Adeline Harris was born December 9, 1870, in Persie, Perth, Scotland. She married Francis Owen Whethered. They had two children Adeline Alice MacTier and Owen Francis MacTier. Adeline Alice married Caesar Harold Copeland. Owen married Betty Baldwin and was a Commander in the Royal Navy. They had four children. Adeline Harris died on May 4, 1900, in Berkshire, England. She was twenty-nine years old. Charles Bayley was born June 13, 1872, in Persie, Perth, Scotland. He died December 1910 unmarried. He was thirty-eight years old. Minnie Moir MacTier was born in 1880. She died on December 8, 1942, unmarried. She was sixty-two years old.

*Louisa and Henry’s second child Maria “Mia” Louisa was born September 25, 1845, in Calcutta, Bengal, India. She married Nottidge Charles Macnamara February 1, 1888, London, England. They had eight children: Norah born February 20, 1866, in Fort Williams, Calcutta, India. She married Montague Lubbock son of Sir John Lubbock and Harriet Hotham on February 1, 1888, in London, England. Montague had a son, Montague Hotham, who survived to adulthood by his first wife Lora Lubbock. He lost three other young children from this marriage. 1891 England census shows young Montague was living with his father and stepmother. Nora died July 25, 1918. She was fifty-two years old. Adeline Louisa was born July 27, 1867, at Fort William, in Calcutta, India. She married Captain Hubert Rouse, son of Henry Rouse and Mara Saunders on July 9, 1893, in Dorset, England. They had a daughter Eileen Mia born April 23, 1895, in Calcutta, India. Adeline died December 4, 1939, in Dorset, England. She was seventy-one years old. Oona was born 1870 in Fort Williams, Bengal, India. She married Sir Bertram Prior Standen son of Richard Spiers Standen and Elizabeth Prior. They had a daughter Nora born October 14, 1891, in Napore, India. Oona died August 25, 1942, in Hampshire, England. Charles Carroll was born May 23, 1875, in St. Georges, Middlesex, England. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel with the Royal Irish Rifles 1st Battalion. He was awarded the Victory British Star and the Sultan’s Sudan 1910 Medal. He was mortally wounded while fighting WW1. He eventually ended up at a hospital in London, England where he died of his wounds on July 15, 1916. Sheila Cameron was born December 5, 1876, and baptized February 4, 1877, in London, England. She married Edward Eden Bradford, son of Edward Bradford and Catherine Penny. Sheila died October 5, 1938, Hampshire, England. She was sixty-one years old. Maive was born June 26, 1880, in London, England. She married Frederick Crawford Goodenough son of Frederick Addington and Mary Lambert on February 19, 1898, in London, England. They had five children William Macnamara born March 10, 1899, Barbara Mary born September 21, 1901, Michael Grant born July 1904, Frances Maive born 1909, and James Grenville born September 19, 1900. Maive died on March 24, 1953, in London, England. She was seventy-three years. Dorothy Mia was born March 31, 1882, London, England. She died November 16, 1965, in London, England. She was eighty-three years old. Patrick Guy was born January 11, and baptized March 13, 1886, in London, England. He married Ellen Floyd Nickerson, daughter of George Augustus Nickerson and Ellen Floyd Tougalin April 1907. They had two children Patrick Carroll born February 28, 1923, and Ellen Floyd born 1924. Sir Patrick was a Commander in the Royal Navy. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire and Order of the Bath. He died April 4, 1947, in Yorkshire West Riding, England. He was sixty-one years old.

*Henry and Louisa welcomed their son William De L’Etang who was born January 17, and baptized on April 17, 1849, Westminster, England. He died September 28, 1867, at The Priory Hospital in Roehampton, London, England. He was eighteen-years old.

*Their son Henry was born May 4, and baptized June 25, 1851, in Bengal, India. He married Ariana Charlotte Morgan daughter of John Lewis Lemarchand and Julia Sophia Sherwill on September 8, 1877, in Hazareebaugh, India. Henry was with the Bengal Police. They had a daughter Nancy Florence Louise born August 16, and baptized September 8, 1878, in London, England. Henry died June 2, 1879, in India. He is buried in London, England. He was twenty-eight years old.

In 1843 when their brother-in-law Colin Mackenzie was held hostage in Cabul, all the sisters were worried about him. Louisa was the point person for their family. She accepted responsibility for any correspondence of the family to and from Colin.

Henry Bayley died on February 2, 1873, in Calcutta, India. He was buried in the same city. He was fifty-six years old.

Louisa died on March 15, 1873, in Middlesex, England. She was buried that same month in Hampstead, England. She was fifty-two years old. ~Deborah Spooner 2022
