Biography

Thomas Patteson was born December 13, 1708, in New Kent County, Virginia, the son of Elizabeth (New) and David Patteson.[1] Thomas married Mary Ballow prior to 1734, when a son was born to them.[2] The couple resided in Goochland County, proven by his wife Mary Patteson of the County of Goochland being gifted 150 acres by the elder Thomas Ballou.[3] They appear to have remained and resided in the western portion of Goochland County, raising their family there, as additional land records indicate Thomas bought 386 acres in Goochland County from Leonard and Thomas Ballou in 1744.[4]

Albemarle County was formed from the western portion of Goochland County by the time Thomas Patteson wrote his will, dated 25 December 1745. Therein he named his "beloved wife Mary" and made provisions for the unborn child she was carrying. He appointed Mary, his brother David Patteson, and Thomas Ballowe, Gent. as his executors. He named the following children, indicating they were all yet minors:[5]

  1. Thomas Patteson
  2. Ann Patteson
  3. Charles Patteson
  4. David Patteson
  5. Leonard Patteson
  6. "Unborn" Patteson

His inventory was reported to the Court 14 May 1747. Later in 1749, Mary and his executors sold the Goochland County land bought from the Ballous five years earlier.[6]

  • Note: An Albemarle Co. Deed indicates his brother David Patteson was of New Kent County, Virginia.

Virginia Land Patents

Thomas received two patents several months after his will was proved (he applied for them earlier).

  • 20 Aug 1747, to Thomas Patteson, 1570 acres in Albemarle County on Walton's Fork of Slate River[8]

Patterson-60 and Patteson-66 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, I believe these two are the same person. Death date for Patterson-60 is more specific since it cites the probate date for his will, but the birth date of 1675 is an estimate lacking a source. Both married Mary Ballow or Ballou and passed away in what later became Buckingham County (Albemarle then).
