Jacques Pantaléon was born in Troyes.[1] His father was a cobbler.[2]
Undertaking studies in common law and theology in Paris he was later appointed a conon of Laon.[2] He attended the First Council of Lyon in 1245.[2] In 1255 he became Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.[2]
Though not a cardinal, he was elected pope on 29 August 1261 and crowned on 4 September 1261.[1][2]
He instituted the feast of Corpus Christi on 11 August 1264.[2]
He died on 2 October 1264 in Perugia.[1][2]
