Rinaldo di Jenne was born in Jenne (Roman Province) about 1185-1199.[1] His mother was a member of the de' Conti di Segni family.[2]
He became a Cardinal on 18 September 1227 and became Dean of the College of Cardinals about 15 years later.[2]
Rinaldo di Jenne was elected pope at Naples on 12 December 1254 and crowned on the 20 December 1254 taking the name Alexander IV.[3][2]
He is known for attempting to reunite the Eastern Orthodox churches with the Roman Catholic Church and for establishing the Inquisition in France.[2]
Pope Alexander IV canonized Saint Clare of Assisi on 26 September 1255 and had witnessed Saint Francis of Assisi's stigmata.[2][4]
He moved to Viterbo when Rome became under the control of the Ghibelline faction.[2]
He died in Viterbo on 25 May 1261 and was buried in Viterbo Cathedral. Unfortunately the tomb was destroyed during renovations in the sixteenth-century.[3][2]

The surname di Jenne refers to coming from Jenne which is where he was born. An auction at Christies Auction House in 2013 for the original bull states his surname as di Jenne (see https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-5749315) Christies is renowned for researching provenance of documents etc so would use the recognised surname. Vatican records list him as di Jenne also. Another quality primary source.
