Biography

Velasquita Sánchez, known as Belaschita, Belasquita in medieval documents, was Infanta del Reino de Pamplona (Princess of Pamplona). ^[1] According to one source, she was born around 0908, ^[2] Considering she had four children with her first husband, Munio Vélaz, and he seems to have died in the period 0926-0929 ^[3] (his successors, Fernando Díaz & Álvaro Herramélliz, became Counts of Álava in 0923 & 0929, respectively, although it is not clear if it was because of their predecessor's death or other, political reasons; also, Velasquita remarried around 0930), ^{[4] [5]} her birth date could be perhaps better estimated @ around 904 under the premise that if Munio died around 0929, she would have married no later than 924 (4 children) at around 20 years of age. However, her father, who may have been born as late as around 0887, ^[6] would have been only 17 years old in 0904 and the three children preceding her would have made him absurdly young for marriage when the first was born, so the date has been left as 0908. The estimated marriage date, 0924, (not included in WT at this time) is in line with the date given in the "Medieval Lands" database (after 0923). ^[5] Her death date has been estimated @ around 968 (60 years old). Her birth and death places are unknown, but Pamplona, Al-Ándalus (in today's Autonomous Community of Navarre (Navarra)), has been used for her birth, because of her parents' connections with the area, and Nájera, Kingdom of Pamplona (currently located in the Province and Autonomous Community of La Rioja), used for her death, because her last husband, Fortún Galíndez, ruled there for nearly 50 years.

Velasquita was the fourth daughter of Toda Aznárez and Sancho I Garcés, King of Pamplona, who had six children: ^[7]

Velasquita married three times. Apparently, she had children only with her first spouse. ^[1]

1. Munio Vélaz, Count of Álava (domni Momi comitis Bizcahiensis, -bef 0930),with whom she had four children:
   1. Aznar Muñoz (Azenari Momiz)
   2. Lope Muñoz (Lupe Momiz)
   3. Sancho Muñoz (Sanzio Momiz)
   4. Velasquita Muñoz (domna Belasquita)
2. Galindo (Bernárdez) de Ribagorza, son of Count Bernardo I Unifredo (Raimúndez) de Ribagorza. They married around 0930. ^[4]
3. Fortún Galíndez, Governor and eventually, Duke, of Nájera.
