To all to whom these Presents shall come Job Otis Senr. & Job Otis Junr. both of Scituate in the County of Plymouth in New England Yeoman Send Greeting &c Know ye that We the sd. Job Otis Senr. & Job Otis junr. for & in Consideration of the Natural Affection Love & good Will which We bear unto Abigail Halliburton of Boston in the County of Suffolk Wido. Daughter of sd. Job Otis Senr. Together with Twenty Shillings to Us in hand paid by sd. Abigail & also in Consideration of her paying for Us a fifth part of the Charges which arose in the Controversy with the Heirs of James Barker Desd. about the Title to the Six hundred acres hereafter mentioned & for diver other good causes & Considerations Have Given Confirm unto the sd. Abigail her Heirs & assigns forever, The one fifth part of a tract of Land lying partly in Hanover & partly in Abington in the County of Plymouth aforesd. being about Six Hundred acres wch. was late by the Estate of James Barker deceasd & was Sold by the Trustees appointed for that End in the Last Will & Testament of sd. James unto the sd. Job Otis Senr. by one Deed bearing date the 18th. Day of January AD. 1721. Bounded as by sd. Decd on Record may appear Reference thereto being had & also one fifth part of one acre of land House orchard which we bought of Joseph Stockbridge adjoining to the South Side of sd. Lands by a Deed bearing Date July. 4th. 1744. Excepting what Lands was sold to Thomas Rogers Jno. Rogers & Joseph Hacse before the Date of this Deed by Job Otis Senr. & also Excepting what Tim ber sd. Job Otis Senr. & Job Otis Junr. Sold to Willm Terril Jas. Whitmarsh Willm Hearcy & Edward Jackson before this Date To Have & to Hold sd granted & bargained Premises with the appurten.ces unto her the sd. Abigail for Heirs & assigns forever To her alone proper Use Behoof for ever Saving as above Excepted & Mercy the Wife of sd. Job Otis Senr. & Prince the Wife of Job Otis Junr. do hereby Give up their Right of Dower & Power of Thirds in the Premises to the sd. Abigail her Heirs & assigns forever. Probate

Job was a slaveholder. The will of Job Otis of Scituate was dated 30 March 1752 and proved on 13 May 1760 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Mercy (she was bequeathed the continued enslavement of one of his black persons), and his children, Ephraim Otis, Mercy Otis, Abigail Otis, Sarah Otis, the children of his deceased daughter Ruth Stockbridge (Charles, Ruth, Mercy, and Elizabeth Stockbridge), his deceased daughter Priscilla, and his eldest son Job Otis.[2]

Enslaved People

  • According to the Vital Records of Scituate, Job Otis enslaved Winsor and his children Patience, Windsor, and Chloe.[3]
  • Winsor married Jenny (she was enslaved by Capt Barker) on 6 August 1737 in Scituate.[4]
  • On 9 November 1745 in Scituate, Winsor, an enslaved black man of Job Otis married Tant, an enslaved black woman of Cudworth.[5]
