Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Hannah (Greneffe) Howard was a Maryland colonist.

Origin

No birth record for Hannah Greneffe has been found, but she was likely born in Anne Arundel County around 1688 and was the daughter of James & Ann Greeneff. Some researchers believe her mother was Ann Howard because her father called John Howard "brother" in his will, but no further evidence has been found of her mother's surname. Hannah was left a portion of her father's plantation in his 1690 will. [1] Hannah Orrick Howard has been identified by researchers as a Grenffe because many of her children had this unusual name as a middle name.

Marriage & Family

No marriage record for Hannah & William Orrick has been found. The couple were married sometime in 1704 based on the recorded birthdate of one of their sons in All Hallow's Parish:

William Orrick and Hannah parents of William Orrick son b. 1 MAY 1705.[2]

Hannah & William were the parents of two other sons and perhaps some daughters whose birth records have not been recorded.

James Greneffe Orrick b. abt. 1709
John Greneffe Orrick b. abt. 1712[3]

Hannah married as her second husband to Gideon Howard before 23 OCT 1723 when Gideon administered the estate of William Orrick with his wife Hannah.[3] The date of Hannah's death has not been found so researchers are not sure which of Gideon's eleven children were born by Hannah. The best guess is that she was the mother of the four eldest children:

  1. John b. abt. 1724
  2. Mathew b. abt. 1726
  3. Samuel b. abt. 1728
  4. Susanna b. abt. 1730

I'm connected to these Orricks, through Hannah and William's first son William. This was my first theory proved by DNA testing back in 2007. This branch of William went to the Carolinas around 1750 with others from the area then spread across the south. Most of the Orricks, and many of the Orick, Arrick, Arick are connected to them.

These Orricks back in Anne Arundel (1650-ish) married into Cromwell, Pendleton, Howard, Hammond, Duvall and other powerful families. In some places they are written as Ourrourke or variation.

I believe some of them were on Gibson Island, there's a road there named JORRICK.

The authorized story about this family is they are from Fife Scotland as the name ORROCK but I find no confirmation of that in any DNA testing so far. But I DO find confirmation of O'Rourke in Ireland via Tigernán Ua Ruairc (see wikipedia on that.

So this would make me Hannah Greneffes' 10th great grandson or something like that. Hoping to learn more from everyone.

What happened to these mystery Greneffes? There's a lot of potential spelling variation with that.

remarriages are always so much fun especially where/when everyone does it. i believe Hannah Greneffe-4 first married William Orrick-2 then married Gideon Howard-747. i need to research this more. i have seen a lot of unsupported connections that give Reason Howard-1572 different parents than Gideon Howard-747 with Hannah Greneffe-4. that's where i will be focusing for a while. if Hannah Greneffe-4 is the mother of Reason Howard-1572 then her date of death (about 1727) must be wrong. i have seen a couple of untrustable sources that have her death in 1740, which actually makes more sense.

if Hannah Greneffe-4 dies in 1727, how can she have Reason Howard-1572 as a son in 1731?

Hannah's death, now (15 Feb 2023) listed as ABOUT 1730, just makes it possible she is the mother of Reason Howard-1572, not a certainty, and perhaps still not likely. another thought i had is that his father Gideon Howard-747 had an unmarried relation with Lydia UNKNOWN-55119 before their marriage and Reverend Gideon leaves Reason out of his will because Reason was not legitimate, having been born to an unmarried mother.

so, i think it is possible Lydia UNKNOWN-55119 is the father of Reason Howard-1572. more research would be needed to find Lydia's LNAB if so. this would be on me as she would be my 6ggm (if Hannah is not).
