John O'Connor was born sometime between 1828 and 1837, probably in January, in Ireland. Family tradition is that he was born in Listowel, County Kerry, but records supporting the exact place in Ireland he was from have not been found.

The funeral of the late John O'Connor was held from St. Francis Church Monday, Dec. 14, with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. O'Connor, who died Dec. 12, at his home, 714 East Burnside street, at the venerable age of nearly eighty years, is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters. Deceased was a pioneer merchant of Portland, coming to this city in 1859. He started the second retail grocery store in Portland.
