Tanzanian anti-colonial activist, politician and political theorist. He governed Tanganyika as prime minister from 1961 to 1962 and then as president from 1962 to 1964, after which he led its successor state, Tanzania, as president from 1964 to 1985.
Mwalimu[1] Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born 13 Apr 1922 at Mwitongo Lodge in Butiama, Tanganyika in what is now Maru Region, Tanzania near the east coast of Lake Victoria. He was one of 25 children of Chief Nyerere Burito (1860-1942), the chief of the Zanaki people, with whom he was the second child of Mugaya Nyang'ombe, Burito's fifth wife of 22.[2]
He passed away from leukemia on 14 Oct 1999 at age 77, in St. Thomas Hospital in London, England.
Julius Nyerere was buried at Mwalimu Nyerere Museum Centre in Butiama alongside his parents. He saw the opening of the museum just months before he passed away.[3]
Julius Nyerere was buried in Butiama Cemetery in his home village of Butiama.[4]
