Biography

This profile is part of the Norris Name Study.

Thomas, christened in 1762 (but born as early as 1759), was a son of Thomas Norris and Patience Harlock. In his "History of Martha's Vineyard", Charles Edward Banks's brief note on Thomas reads, "23. Thomas, b. 1759; rem. Philadelphia; mariner; had two sons Thomas 8 and Howes; daus. Sarah, Rebecca, Mary, Hannah and Elizabeth."[1] (Son Howes may easily be confused with his cousin Howes Norris -- a son of Thomas's brother Samuel -- as both were evidently born in, or about, the same year, 1803, although Banks puts the latter's birth in 1813. The latter, however, died infamously at sea in 1842, while the former died in Pennsylvania in 1838.)[2]. Thomas's "Seaman's Proof of Citizenship" from 1809 offers this description: "aged forty-nine years, of the height of 5 feet 8 1/2 inches dark – hair light – complexion blue – eyes, a scar on the left side of his chin". Banks does not offer the name of Thomas's wife, but a record exists of his 1788 marriage, at Philadelphia, to Sarah Martin.

Captain Thomas Norris died, presumably in Philadelphia where he is buried, in 1826.
