Biography

Thomas was born about 1856. He was the son of James Nixon, a saddler (saddle maker).

Enlisted in the No.12 Brigade on 2nd January 1877 at Preston Lancashire.
Aged 22, 5 feet 4 ½ inches tall, blue eyes, dark brown hair and a fresh complexion. He was a carter and born in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland.
He was in: the East Indies from 1877 to 1878
Afghanistan 1878 to 1879
East Indies 1879 to 1883
Signed off by an officer of the 2nd Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in January 1883.
21st January 1883 was with the A. Reserve for the Burnley District as a private until his discharge on 2nd January 1889. Age: 34
NB: no wounds of good character
Given a medal for participating in the Afghan war.
His education was to 4 class. Unable to sign his name on enlistment.
His next of kin was a brother James.
He intended to live at Heatley St Blackburn.

On 24 Nov 1883, Thomas married Elizabeth Peacock.

Elizabeth (Peacock) Nixon passed away in 1884, as there was one Elizabeth Nixon, aged 26, burial registered at Blackburn, #B/163/67. The timing is right for it to have been the result of childbirth.

On 30 July 1887, Thomas married Elizabeth Jane Fielding, daughter of James Hilton Fielding.
