Biography

Edward was born June 8, 1865 in New York [1] to Edward Nicolai [7,8] and Eva (last name Proch in 7, but Rieb in [8]). Both of his parents were born in Germany [1] (although they were listed as being born in the US on his death certificate [7], perhaps an error by his wife when providing the information). He worked as a piano stringer and maker [1,2,3] and later as a chemical keeper for a laboratory [6]. He was not a veteran [6].

He married Emma Fath [4] on June 5th, 1887 [8]. At the time he was living at 415 W 36th St, NYC and she was living at 103 Essex St, NYC. Her parents were Charles Fath and Minna Vonhof. Witnesses were Lieut. George Fleischer and Emma Vonhof.

Edward and Emma had 9 children: William (b. 1888), Margaret (b. 1889), Edward (b. 1891), Walter (b. 1892), Arthur (b. 1895), Emma (b. 1897), Anna (b. 1900), Winnie (b. 1903), and Robert (b. 1905).

In 1900, they lived at 579 E. 153rd St in the Bronx [1]. By 1910 they lived at 394 153rd St in the Bronx [2], where he lived until his death [7].

He passed away on May 8, 1935, at the age of 69 [7]. The cause of death was given as "Carcinoma of Stomach" with contributory illnesses "Chronic myocarditis" and "secondary anemia".
