Biography

Anna was born in New York [1] in May 1900 [2]. She had 8 siblings (5 brothers and 3 sisters). Her parents, Edward and Anna, were both born in the US to German parents. In 1925 she married Leroy McSorley and had 4 children with him (3 daughters, 1 son). She died in 1985.

When she was born, her family was living at 579 E. 153rd St in the Bronx [8]. Living in the house were her father Edward (age 34, b. June 1865, married 13 years, piano stringer), mother Emma (age 35, b. Aug 1864, 7 children born, 7 living), brother William (age 12, b. Apr 1888, at school), sister Margaret (age 10, b. Oct 1889, at school), brother Edward (age 9, b. Mar 1891, at school), brother Walter (age 7, b. Dec 1892, at school), brother Arthur (age 4, b. Oct 1895), sister Emma (age 2, b. Nov 1897), and grandmother Eva (mother of Edward, age 71, b. Feb 1829, widowed, had 3 children, 2 living, immigrated in 1861).

In 1910 Anna was 9 lived at 349 153rd St in the Bronx [6], with her father Edward (age 44, married for 22 years, piano worker), mother Emma (age 45, 9 children born, 9 still living), brother William (age 21, clerk), sister Margaret (age 20), brother Edward (age 19, piano worker), brother Walter (age 17, clerk), brother Arthur (age 14, at school), sister Emma (age 12, at school), sister Minnie (age 7, at school), and brother Robert (age 5).

In 1915 she was 15 and living at the same address [5], with her father Edward (age 49, piano stringer), mother Emma (age 50, housewife), sister Margaret (age 25, helping with housework), brother Edward (age 23, piano stringer), brother Walter (age 22 fireman in the U.S. Navy), brother Arthur (age 19, clerical at a wall paper office[?]), sister Emma (age 17, ribbon primer [?]), sister Minnie (age 12, at school), and brother Robert (age 9, at school). Anna was working as "watcher embroidering".

In 1920 she was 20 and at the same location [4], with her father Edward (age 54, piano maker), mother Emma (age 55), brother Walter (age 27, marine sailor), brother Anthony (age 24, clerk at a wall paper facotry), sister Emma (age 22 Telephone Operatory at N.Y. Telephone), sister Minnie (age 17 stenographer at N.Y Telephone), and brother Robert (age 15, at school). Anna was working as a Telephone Operator at N.Y. Telephone. Both of Anna's parents were born in the US but their parents were born in Germany.

In 1925 Anna was 25 and living at the same house [3]. She was employed as a Telephone Operator. Her father Edward was age 60, born in the US, and working as a Chemist Helper. Her mother Anna was age 60, also born in the US, housewife. Also living at home were her sister Minnie (age 23, Telephone Operator), brother Robert (age 21, Telephone Installer), and a female named Dorothy who is listed on the census as "daughter in law" (to Edward) but is only age 4.

On June 24, 1925 she married Leroy Forbes McSorley at the Congregational Church of North New York [2]. Anna's address is given as 349 E. 153 St, NYC, age 25, born in New York City, parents Edward Nicolai and Emma Fath. Leroy's address is 1079 Woodycrest Ave, he is age 35, working as a steamfitter. His parents are listed as Frank MacSorley and Margaret Forbes. It was the first marriage for both the bride and groom. The groom's witness's last name is MacSorley but the first and middle initials are difficult to read [perhaps Wm. for his brother William, who would have been about 21] and the bride's witness is Minnie D Nicolai [Anna's sister who would have been age 22].

In the 1940 US Census [1] they were living at 946 College Avenue in the Bronx, New York, which they rented for $38 per month. Anna is listed as age 39, with highest grade completed marked as 8th grade. Leroy was listed as age 49 and working as an Inspector for a Boiler Co., with an income of $2000 per year. Also listed are their daughters Mildred (age 12), Anne (age 11), and Edith (age 8), and son Leroy (age 2). The family lived in the same house in 1935.
