Biography

Joan (or Jane) Neville[1] Joan Neville was the daughter and sole heiress of John Neville of Oversley and Wem, by his first wife, Elizabeth Newmarch.

The lucky husband was to be Sir William Gascoigne of Gawthorpe, and this marriage set the Gascoignes on the road to wealth and an earldom (though they were called Wentworth by then).

Jane and Sir William had three sons:

  • Sir William, heir
  • John
  • Humphrey (visitation says died as boy)[2]

and four daughters:

  • Margaret, wife of Sir Christopher Warde
  • Agnes, wife of Sir Robert Plumpton
  • Elizabeth
  • Joan

Sir William was living on 15 Jul 1461 but dead by 13 Jan 1463/4, when his widow obtained a licence to marry the ill-starred Sir James Harington of Brierley. She and James had three sons (John, Thomas, and William), but the heir of James was his illegitimate son.[3]

She would have been 11 when 1st son William was born!

Both her birth date and her won William's are estimated. I have adjusted son William's to about 1450, which is what was already said in the bio. It is very common not to be sure of birth years in this period.

I added Magna Carta as manager.

Hello everyone.

What is the primary source artifact attesting to her given name? We use both Jane, and Joan, in the biography.

Minor correction to what I wrote: John Neville of Oversley, not Wem. Wem went to his mother's elder sister Elizabeth (Ferrers) Greystoke.

Jane is presumed dead before her husband wrote his will in 1482.

Neville-427 and Neville-21 appear to represent the same person because: Joan and Jane have the same parents, were born the same year, and were married to the same man.

Neville-427 and Neville-21 do not represent the same person because: she is a sister and not same person.

Joan can't merge into Jane without management. This is the system message: "Neville-427 is project protected. This means that it cannot be merged into any other profile."

Please adopt the profile and adjust as needed. Thx;)
