Biography

Esther was born on May 25, 1683. Her parents were Nathaniel Baldwin and Hanah Botchford. [1][2]

Research Notes

Looks like family name should be Baldwin. Father was Nathaniel. But the Samuels need to be sorted out.

She purchased land in Saybrook, Ct. [1]page 108.

Mrs. Esther Sanford was a sister of Stephen Parmelee who married Elizabeth (Baldwin), sister of Hannah Baldwin. Hannah Baldwin and her sister Esther, who married Samuel Sanford (Samuel, Thomas) and Elizabeth who married Parmelee were daughters of Nathaniel and Hannah (Botchford) Baldwin. Their ancestry on the Baldwin side dates back to Richard Baldwin of Cholesbury, Buckinghamshire, Eng., who died in 1553. His great grandson, the grandfather of Hannah, Esther and Elizabeth, born in Cholesbury, England, came to this country and settled in Milford, Ct., where he died in 1650— Hannah Botchford was the daughter of Henry Botchford of Milford, one of the pioneer settlers.[1]page 106-107

Note: When you read this there is an Esther Baldwin sister of Hannah Baldwin and an Esther Parmelee sister of Steven Parmelee who married Elizabeth Baldwin, Hannah Baldwin's sister. But I have not found Esther Parmelee sister of Steven. Note: This reference gives Stephen but NO ESTHER Parmelee - The New England Historical and Genealogical Register - https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=2wjybwOT4HAC&hl=en&pg=GBS.RA1-PA404 AND https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=2wjybwOT4HAC&hl=en&pg=GBS.RA1-PA408

These papers taken together absolutely prove that Samuel Sanford married for his second wife Esther Parmelee, that she was then the widow of Deacon Nathaniel Parmelee, of Killingsworth, Ct. The author in all his research and assistance by others, was unable to learn who Esther was, until the discovery of these old papers. - https://archive.org/details/thomassanfordemi01sanf/page/108/mode/2up?q=Samuel+and+Esther

AKA

Alternate name may be spelled Easther. [1]page 108 I also think that her maiden name is Baldwin. Can not say conclusively.

Why is she shown to have a maiden name of Nathaniel? As confusing as this profile is, I don't see Nathaniel coming into it at all.

Nathaniel was likely her father's or first husband's first name. I have been busy on other things. I would like to take one more look at the Sanford/Baldwin mess before I toss it up in the air for everyone else to work on. See comments below. Could send you my research work if you want to dig in. Thanks.

I am totally confused by this profile and the maiden name. The biography talks about a woman with the maiden name of Parmalee....

This is a work in progress. There are 5 Samuel's and 3 Esther's (one a sister to Stephen Parmelee) to sort out. I will be working on this over the next few days. If you have insight into this mess please leave some sources or notes to help guide this work. Feel free to check back later and see if I have it cleaned up. Please note that the comments about Parmelee's are under the research heading. Thanks.

Just wanted to update you after your earlier question. As I continue to work on this profile, I have found:
  • 7 Samuels and 4 Esthers. (I am keeping a table of all the players.)
  • I have merged two of the Samuels and eliminated 3 as relatives not married to this Esther.

Currently, I am waiting for the merge of Nathaniel-9 and Nathaniel-36. (Other PM has not responded yet). Then I need to consider: 1. If this Esther is really Baldwin-516 and the maiden name was confused when she was created. One source says she was first married to Nathaniel Parmelee's, and his first name might have been used and not his last name. 2. When she was created her father's first name (Nathaniel Baldwin) was used instead of Baldwin. 3. Or is she Esther Parmelee, sister of Steven Parmalee found in another source.

If any or all are true, that would clean up a lot of this family tree. When that is done, I can clean up the Bio.

Thanks for paying attention to our work.

Appears to be a duplicate of Nathaniel-36. Both are unsourced. After more research, if the connection with the husband holds up, Nathaniel-36 should be merged into Nathaniel-9. Then Sanford-1798 should be merged into Sanford-775. They could both use more sources.

I can share the table with you if you want. Or if you can speed the merge request that would help.
