Biography

Friezer Mummert has German Roots.

Friezer, son of Jacob Mummert and Matilda Altland, was born 4 June 1894 in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1][2][3] His early years were spent in Paradise, where his father Jacob (age 36) was a farmer. The five-year-old Friezer lived with his parents Jacob and Matilda (39), siblings Alice Katherine (9), Charles Elmer (7), Jacob Peter (4), Elias James (3) and Alpheus Chauncey (6 months), and maternal grandmother Anna Mary Altland (66) (she is listed as a brother-in-law, but marked as female.)[4]

By 1910 the family had relocated to Hamilton, Adams County, Pennsylvania, where Jacob (age 47) continued to cultivate the land with the help of his sons Charles E. (17) and Friezer J. (15).[5] Tilda (50) kept house and tended the other children: Allice K. (18), Jacob P. (13), Eli J. (11) and Alpheus J. (9).[5]

On 2 January 1916 in Hanover, York County, he married Fannie M. Boart.[6] It is suggested that she was the daughter of Ellsworth Boart and Catharine Ann Mummert.[citation needed] The following year Friezer registered for the draft and declared himself as living in Hanover, York County and working as a farmhand for Simon Hostetter in Berwick Township, Adams County.[1] His is described as short with a medium build, dark blue eyes and brown hair.[1]

Soon thereafter the couple began to grow their large family:

  • Walter R. (b. 23 May 1919;[7] married; d. 21 April 1974).[7]
  • Robert Henry (b. 25 January 1922;[8] m. Frances A Bealing;[9] d. 7 March 1977).[8]
  • Henrietta G. (b. 17 August 1923;[10] m. Nevin Lawrence Wildasin;[10] d. 6 November 2002).[10]
  • Harold Ellsworth (b. 1 July 1925;[11] d. 1 July 1925).[11] One of twins.
  • Howard Jacob (b. 1 July 1925;[12] d. 24 July 1925).[12] Twin of Harold.
  • Betty Jane (b. 26 July 1928;[14] m. Gordon Elwood Wolf;[14] m. __ Zeigler;[14] d. 14 September 2016).[14]
  • Burnell Friezer (b. 28 November 1929;[15] m. Arlene Edna Mummert;[16] d. 23 February 2018).[15]
  • Virginia Anna (b. 3 November 1934;[17] d. 18 December 1934).[17]
  • Ralph Edward (b. 7 May 1936;[18] d. 24 September 1989).[18] He married and divorced at least twice before dying in Houston, Texas.

An online genealogy shows a daughter Alice (b. ~1931; d. 29 May 1995), but there are no records to confirm this,

By 1920 the family is found in Hamilton Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, near many of his relatives.[19] Friezer U. (age 25) managed the farm with the help of Clyde F. Myers (14), while Fannie M. (20) tended the home and their seven-month-old son Walter R.[19]

The family moved back to Hanover, before 1930, where the household included Friezer (age 37, farmer), his wife Fannie M. (31) their children Walter R. (10), Robert H. (8), Henriette G. (7), Mable T. (3), Betty J. (1) and Burnell F. (7 months), a farmhand Peter I. Garman (19) and a maid servant Margaret V. Mummert (16).[20]

Fannie died 9 October 1938,[21] leaving Friezer with many children. It appears that the younger children were raised by other family members. The youngest would have been 14 at the time of the 1940 census, when an unencumbered Friezer (age 44) was shown having moved from his farm (1935) into Hanover proper.[22] There he lived alone and worked as a laborer.[22]

In 1942, Friezer reported he was a cattle dealer, working on commission.[2] His nearest contact is Henrietta Wildasin, his daughter.[2] At that time he was described as 5'8" tall, 184 lbs. with gray eyes and hair, a ruddy complexion and needing glasses.[2]

He died 19 March 1952 in York County and was buried at Paradise Holtzschwamm Lutheran Church Cemetery in Thomasville, York.[3]
