Biography

James Bell Moody was born on 30th January 1911 in Brighton, Victoria, Australia. He was the son of Henry Moody and Emily Hitch.[1]

James Moody is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Second Australian Imperial Force 1940-1945
2/1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion

On 19th March 1940 James enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia's overseas expeditionary force during the Second World War, and was posted to the Signals Platoon, 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion. He was demobilised on 4th February 1945. [2] Upon his return to Australia, he initially lived with his father at 28 Meadow Street, St Kilda, Victoria. Following the war, he was issued the 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945. James' best mate during service was Don Gill. His exploits during the Second World War are recounted in Ion Idriess' book Horrie the Wog Dog, reprinted as Moody's Tale: The Story of Corporal Horrie [3]

He passed away in January 1979, aged 67, and was interred at the Portland South Cemetery on 10th January. [4][5]

Research note

Two marriages are listed in Victoria for a James Bell Moody, first to Patricia Leslie Bell in 1935 [6] and second to Joan Booth in 1951. [7] The Patricia married again in 1949 to a John Douglas Paterson. [8]
